Mark Z. Jacobson, Ph.D.

Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director, Atmosphere/Energy Program, Stanford University Co-Founder, The Solutions Project

Location: Stanford, CA

Dr. Mark Jacobson is an expert in clean, renewable energy solutions to the problems caused by fossil fuels in exacerbating climate change. Dr. Jacobson has studied the transition to wind, water, and solar in all fifty states, including Hawaiʻi. He has created a plan that serves as an example of one pathway that can be taken to decarbonize all sectors, including transportation. Dr. Jacobson concludes that it is technologically and economically feasible to transition from a predominantly fossil-fuel based energy system to a 100% clean, renewable energy system for all energy sectors, including transportation, in Hawaiʻi by 2045, with about 80% conversion to renewable sources by 2030. Dr. Jacobsonʻs report is important to support youth plaintiffs’ claims that not only is it essential for the transportation system to decarbonize, it is also entirely possible.
